Homemade Naan Bread Recipe
naan bread - recipe video
I don't think I can go back to shop bought after this. Fluffy, thick, chewy. Obviously not quite as flavourful as an Indian takeaway naan because most people don't have a tandoor oven at home, but, amazing, fluffy and delicious and so so easy to make. I'm not saying this is in any way, shape or form authentic. But, Whether you want naan to serve with Indian curries, kebabs, or just to enjoy on its own brushed with garlic butter, this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to make delicious, easy, fluffy naan bread from scratch.

Ingredients for Naan Bread
To make 8 delicious naans, you’ll need:
600g bread flour (strong white flour for extra chewiness)
100g full-fat natural yogurt (adds softness and tang)
10g kosher salt
2 tbsp melted butter or vegetable oil
7g (1 sachet) yeast
1 tbsp Nigella seeds (black onion seeds)
275ml warm water
(Optional: Melted ghee or garlic butter for brushing after cooking)
How to Make Naan Bread (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Mix & Knead the Dough
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Knead by hand for 10-15 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic, or use a stand mixer for 10 minutes with a dough hook.
Step 2: First Rise
Cover the dough and let it proof for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 3: Shape the Naan
Divide the dough into 8 equal balls. Let them rest for 10 minutes before rolling each one out into a teardrop or oval shape.
Step 4: Cook on a Hot Pan
Preheat a cast iron skillet (or heavy pan) over medium heat. Place one naan into the pan. While it cooks on one side (about 1-2 minutes), roll out the next naan. When the first naan puffs slightly, flip it and cook for another minute. Flip again if needed for even cooking.
Step 5: Finish with Butter
Once cooked, move the naan to a plate and brush with melted ghee, butter, or garlic butter for extra flavor. Repeat with the remaining dough.
Tips for Perfect Naan Bread
Use warm water (not hot) to activate the yeast.
Cast iron pans give the best char and texture.
Resting the dough balls before rolling makes them easier to shape.
For garlic naan, brush with garlic butter after cooking.
