Nightmare Before Christmas Recipes: Frog’s Breath No-Jito, Worm’s Wort Soup & Jack Skellington Cheesecake
Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the ultimate Halloween classics. With its spooky-yet-charming characters, unforgettable songs, and just the right amount of creepy comedy, it’s the perfect film to inspire some fun Halloween party food.
Why not serve your own versions of Frog’s Breath, Worm’s Wort Soup, and a Jack Skellington Oreo Cheesecake while you watch Jack Skellington, Sally, and Oogie Boogie come to life? These recipes are easy to make, family-friendly, and can be adapted for kids or adults.
Frog’s Breath No-Jito (Halloween Mocktail)
This green, minty mocktail is inspired by Sally’s famous Frog’s Breath. It’s refreshing, spooky-looking, and perfect for Halloween parties. Add a splash of rum or gin if you want an adult version.
Ingredients (serves 2)
-
1 lime
-
Splash of lime cordial
-
Few sprigs of mint
-
Sprite, 7-Up, or lemonade
-
Plenty of ice
Method
-
Cut the lime in half. Slice one half into wedges for garnish and dice the other half into small pieces. Divide the diced lime between two glasses.
-
Add a splash of lime cordial and a few mint leaves. Muddle with the back of a spoon or rolling pin to release the oils.
-
Fill each glass with plenty of ice and top up with lemonade.
-
Stir, garnish with a lime wedge, and serve.
Optional: Add a splash of rum or gin for an adult Halloween cocktail.
Worm’s Wort Soup (Curried Butternut Squash & Spinach Soup)
In the film, Worm’s Wort is described as having a mild cinnamon flavour. My version is a warming, spiced butternut squash and spinach soup, perfect for chilly autumn nights. This recipe serves 4–6 and makes a brilliant Halloween starter.
Ingredients
-
2 litres chicken or vegetable stock
-
1 onion, finely diced
-
3 garlic cloves, grated
-
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
-
500g butternut squash, peeled and diced
-
1 tsp curry powder
-
1 tsp chilli flakes
-
1 tsp garam masala
-
1 tbsp fenugreek leaves
-
120g baby spinach
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1 tbsp vegetable oil
-
Salt & pepper, to taste
Method
-
Preheat oven to 200°C. Place squash on a lined tray, drizzle with oil, sprinkle with curry powder, salt, and pepper. Roast for 40 minutes until golden.
-
Blanch spinach in boiling water until vibrant green, then plunge into ice water. Drain well.
-
Heat butter in a large pot. Add onion with a pinch of salt and pepper and cook for 20 minutes, stirring, until soft and golden.
-
Stir in garlic, ginger, chilli flakes, and garam masala. Cook for 1 minute.
-
Add roasted squash and stock. Simmer for 15 minutes.
-
Add spinach and fenugreek, then blend until smooth.
-
Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot, with a swirl of cream if desired.
Jack Skellington Oreo Cheesecake
No Nightmare Before Christmas menu would be complete without Jack Skellington himself! This no-bake Oreo cheesecake is decorated with Jack’s spooky grin — the perfect Halloween dessert.
Ingredients
-
2 packs Oreos
-
3 tbsp melted butter
-
400g cream cheese
-
400ml double cream
-
100g caster sugar
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
Method
-
Blend Oreos into fine crumbs. Reserve ¼ for decorating. Mix the rest with melted butter and press firmly into the base of a 6-inch cake pan.
-
Whisk cream cheese, cream, sugar, and vanilla until thick and fluffy (stiff peaks).
-
Spread the mixture over the Oreo base. Smooth the top and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
-
Before serving, use the reserved Oreo crumbs to create Jack’s eyes and mouth. A printed stencil makes this super easy.
Tip: You can also make individual mini cheesecakes for party portions.
